How to enable dark theme on WhatsApp for Android

Enable Dark theme

WhatsApp is the latest app introducing the dark mode for its users. The company calls it a dark theme. The option is now available in the beta version of the app and will be available to all users in the stable version in the coming months.

The dark mode is important because it not just consumes less battery but also puts less strain in eyes, especially in the night. I personally prefer using dark mode in most of the apps and also recommended the same.

In this article, I will tell you how to enable the dark mode or the dark theme on WhatsApp.

Enable dark theme on WhatsApp for Android

For now, the dark theme is only available in WhatsApp beta. So, you need to install WhatsApp beta on your phone. When the feature is available in the stable version, you won’t need the beta version. You can install WhatsApp beta from this link. This will replace your existing WhatsApp app without affecting your chat and other data. But the beta version is for testing and it may have bugs. So install only if you know the downsides of using the beta.

Launch WhatsApp app. Then click on three vertical dots located at top right side of the app. Now select the Settings to launch settings window. Here, click on the Chats option.

In Chats panel, you will see the option saying Theme. Click on it and you will see the option to choose from Light of Dark theme. Click on Dark to enable the Dark theme on WhatsApp.

Now you can enjoy the dark theme on WhatsApp.

Dark theme not just puts less strain on eyes, it also consumes less battery in AMOLED panels as compared to light theme. So, you should start using the dark theme if your phone has an AMOLED display.

Wrap Up

Even if the feature is available in beta, steps to enable the dark theme will remain the same when the feature will hit the stable version. I use beta to get access to features before they hit the stable version. If you do not want to deal with bugs of beta apps, you should wait until the feature comes to the stable version.

In this article, I have used the beta update having version number 2.20.13. If you are downloading the beta version of the app, make sure you are using the mentioned version of beta WhatsApp to get the feature.
