How to enable Google Chat in Gmail for Android and iOS

Gmail app for Android and iOS lets you access your emails. But the app also allows you to have one to one or group conversations with your Google contacts. For this, you need to first enable the Google Chat in Gmail. Now you can also make audio and video calls using Google chat in Gmail. So, enabling Google chat in Gmail now makes sense.

What is Google Chat?

Google Chat is basically the successor to Hangouts. It is available as a separate app but you can also enable it within the Gmail app to talk to your Google contacts. Google Chat for Gmail lets you have text conversations, audio calls, and video calls.

Enable Google Chat in Gmail app

Open Gmail app. Now tap the menu icon at the top left corner and select Settings. It will ask you to choose a Google account. Then Under the “General” tab, turn on Chat.

I have added screenshots of the Gmail iOS app. But steps to enable Google chat on Android are the same. That’s the reason I am not adding steps to enable Google chat on Android separately.

Now you know how to enable Google Chat in Gmail app for Android and iOS. Google Chat is a dedicated app available in Play Store and App Store. After enabling Google Chat within Gmail, you don’t need the Google Chat app. You can keep the conversation within the Gmail app and talk to your Google contacts.
