How to setup AMP for WordPress

AMP for WordPress

Few days back, I wrote a post about AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) to explain how it works and why it is important. If you do not know about AMP, you should read that article before continue further reading on this. AMP aims to offer fast web experience on the slow network. It loads pages instantly with only a few useful elements. So, you will only get important content.

You can also see AMP as very basic HTML pages with fewer styles and no animation. Not all kind of ads will work on AMP.  I am not sure how it will affect the web, but Google is trying to push AMP pages. You can see AMP results in the form of slider while searching something on mobile phones. News websites have already started using AMP. So if you run a news website, you should now think about implementing AMP.

Many of you already know that I own Techlomedia, a gadgets news website. So, I decided ti implement AMP on it to see how it works. Once I got success in properly implementing AMP on Techlomedia, I decided to write an article explaining everything. Although, it is easy but you many face traffic tracking and SEO related issues. So, I thought to explain thing in easy to understand manner.

How to setup AMP for WordPress

As I explained in the previous post, you need to do coding for this. But for WordPress, there are few plugins available. I tested few plugins to implement AMP on my news blog Techlomedia. Based on my personal experiences with few plugins, I am going to tell what plugin is best to use as this moment.

AMP by Automattic

There is a good plugin AMP by Automattic which automatically enables AMP for your website. You only need to enable this plugin and you are done. AMP pages can be accessed by adding /amp/ at the end of every URL. Good thing is that this plugin also adds rel=“amphtml” tag in your blog posts pointing to AMP pages. So, your AMP pages will be discoverable by Google. Now, it depends on Google whether to give your website a priority or not. I mean, your pages could be on the AMP slider results but it is not sure. Google has final rights to select what pages to show there.

This plugin removes every styling thing and only use the logo of your website on AMP pages. This plugin has no settings page. So, you cannot customize anything or tell plugin what to do. I wanted to add few things and change few colors but there was no option. The only thing I could do was editing the plugin but I recommend not to do this.

How to take care of SEO on AMP for WordPress?

Now the other thing was the setting up proper SEO tags for this. This plugin uses default set of metadata and hence it may not be optimal. SEO by Yoast does not work properly with this plugin. In place of modifying the existing plugin to work with this AMP plugin, they have released a new plugin Glue for Yoast SEO and AMP. This plugin automatically integrates AMP with SEO by
Yoast and makes your work lot easier.

Glue for Yoast SEO & AMP

So, you only need to install these two plugins and you are done with implementing AMP for your WordPress blog. Glue plugin also adds an options page which you can access by navigating to SEO -> AMP.

Glue for AMP

This options page lets you select pages for which you want to enable the AMP pages. It also lets you customize few things which you couldn’t do with AMP plugin. The best thing which you can do is adding your Google Analytics code.

Here, you must know one important thing. You cannot add your analytics code directly in the Google analytics code text area. You will have to add analytics code which is compatible with AMP.

See this code for basic level of AMP analytics tracking. Be sure to remove the comments part while adding this code in your website.

<amp-analytics type="googleanalytics" id="analytics1">
<script type="application/json">
  "vars": {
    "account": "UA-XXXXX-Y"  // Replace with your property ID.
  "triggers": {
    "trackPageview": {  // Trigger names can be any string. trackPageview is not a required name.
      "on": "visible",
      "request": "pageview"

If you have added many rules for tracking conversions and goals, you need to modify this code as per your needs. I recommend you to read this AMP analytics tutorial to understand how to implement this.

Now to check whether your AMP pages are valid, you need to open the AMP page in Chrome and then open the browser console to see if any AMP validation errors are reported. Open the URL by appending #development=1 at the end of the URL. it should be like the URL given below:

If it shows something like below, your page is fine and error free. In case of any error, it will spot and you will have to fix it.

AMP validation

Google Search Console also got a separate section to see if there is any error with your AMP pages. You should check this page after 2-3 days. In case, there is any error, you will spot it in this section. If you have already checked for AMP validation, I don’t think you should see anything here.

Accelerated Mobile Pages in search console

Now, you need to wait for few days until Google crawls your website and list your AMP pages. There is no guarantee that Google will start showing your pages in AMP section.

There are also few other plugins but I found those plugins a bit bulky in nature. And the AMP page generated by those plugins was also not very fast. WordPress plugin by Page Frog gives much more advanced features. This plugin also lets you set up Facebook instant articles. But, I wanted a solution to create pages as light as possible. So, I decided to use this very basic plugin. And it is working fine for me.

Now, AMP has been implemented on Techlomedia and working fine. I also considering to make those pages as default mobile pages to offer better and light experience to my mobile readers.

I hope this article helped you. If you have anything to ask, you can comment below. I will try to answer as soon as possible.
