Google’s AMP project basically aims to make mobile experience better and hence it wants developers to take care of speed of web pages on mobile devices. AMP specifies set of technologies to create fast web pages. These web pages will appear in different format in search results and will load much faster than other mobile pages.

What is Google’s AMP Project

AMP stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages. it is a Google’s initiative designed to load content lightning fast. TO achieve this, it does many ways including only allowing asynchronous scripts, sizing all resources statically and avoiding third-party Javascript as much as possible.

AMP has been segmented into three parts:

  • AMP HTML – HTML page with custom AMP properties.
  • AMP JS – AMP JS library stores JS resources. It manages resource loading and gives you the custom tags mentioned above, to ensure a fast rendering of your page.
  • Google AMP Cache– AMP CDN is a proxy-based CDN to deliver AMP documents.

How do Accelerated Mobile Pages work?

AMP or Accelerated Mobile Pages are similar to other HTML pages but with limited set of functions to focus on just content. Allowed technical functions are defined and governed by the open source AMP spec.

It appears as cards results above the original search results. It helps publishers use rich media like carousels, maps data visualizations and videos. See the snapshot below.

How to make your AMP pages discoverable?

You have learnt how to create AMP pages and now how to make it discoverable by Google. There is a new rel attribute for it. You will have to use rel=“amphtml” for this. This will be present in your standard page to point the AMP version of the page.

Add the following to the non-AMP page to let Google know the AMP version of the current page.

And this to the AMP page to let Google know the original page.

Will AMP affect advertising?

Yes, it will. AMP is for lightning fast mobile pages. So, you will not be able to integrate irritating and low ads. But you can always monetize your website with optimized ad inventory.
